ARGAN OIL

A multifunctional cosmetic active ingredient combining barrier repair, antioxidant protection, and sensory elegance
INCI: Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil
Source: Cold-pressed from the kernels of the argan tree (Argania spinosa) native to Morocco

I. Composition Architecture:
The fatty acid fraction of argan oil accounts for approximately 99% and exists mainly in the form of triglycerides. Oleic acid (approximately 43–49%) and linoleic acid (approximately 29–36%) together account for more than 70% of the total. This ratio preserves the spreadability and emollient feel contributed by oleic acid while providing sufficient linoleic acid to participate in epidermal lipid metabolism. Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that skin cannot synthesize on its own; when applied topically, it can integrate directly into the ceramide structures of the stratum corneum, reinforcing the lipid matrix of the barrier from within.

The unsaponifiable fraction constitutes argan oil’s “functional micronutrient” components: tocopherol content reaches as high as 600–800 mg/kg, dominated by gamma-tocopherol, which embeds in cell membrane phospholipid layers, intercepts lipid peroxyl radicals, and interrupts oxidative chain reactions. Two characteristic phytosterols—schottenol and spinasterol—provide additional free radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory activity. Squalene, polyphenols (ferulic acid, vanillic acid, etc.), and triterpenoids further supplement antioxidant and skin-healing dimensions of activity.

Argan oil provides lipids “isomorphic” to the skin barrier, together with a complete lipophilic antioxidant payload.

II. Skin Care Benefits:

  1. Barrier repair and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) control
Linoleic acid integrates into the ceramide matrix, directly replenishing structural deficiencies in the intercellular lipids of the stratum corneum. In a 12-week clinical study of postmenopausal women using 100% argan oil daily on the face and body, skin hydration increased by 19% and transepidermal water loss decreased by 14%. Another randomized, double-blind study measured elasticity and hydration with a Cutometer and Corneometer, respectively, and confirmed improvements in skin elasticity and hydration under a 60-day regimen combining daily oral intake and topical application. For dry, sensitive, and barrier-impaired skin conditions, this mechanism means “lipid replenishment” rather than merely “water replenishment.”
  2. Antioxidant and anti-aging support
The combination of tocopherols, polyphenols, and phytosterols gives argan oil multi-target free radical scavenging capacity. In vitro studies have confirmed its antioxidant activity; in composite topical formulations containing argan oil, statistically significant improvements in hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle appearance were observed within 12 weeks. It should be noted that the evidence for anti-aging effects of argan oil alone remains weaker than that for barrier repair, but as an antioxidant lipid-phase component in formulations, it can provide a stable lipophilic defense layer for the overall anti-aging system.
  3. Soothing and tolerability
The sterol fraction of argan oil exhibits anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting PLA₂, and triterpenoids contribute skin-healing properties. It is suitable for dry, sensitive, and mature skin, including adjunctive care for barrier-fragile conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

III. Hair Care Benefits:

  1. Lightweight conditioning and frizz control
Argan oil forms a fine conditioning film on the hair surface, lubricating the cuticle and reducing friction between fibers.
  2. Protection against heat styling and chemical damage
The oil film acts as a sacrificial barrier during heat styling. It can improve the quality of hair after intense coloring or bleaching.
  3. Improvement of shine and elasticity
Argan oil can improve hair shine and elasticity.
